Tobago travel guide
Tobago is small enough to cross in an afternoon and full of places buses don't reach. Here's what to know before you land, how driving works on the island, and the trips worth taking from Crown Point.
Cars from TT$300 a day · Free airport pickup · 24/7 roadside assistance

Before you go
The essentials for your first day on the island, from which side of the road to drive on to which numbers to call.

Getting around
The Claude Noel Highway links Crown Point and Scarborough. Beyond that, roads follow the coast and climb the hills, so the drive is part of the trip.

01
Traffic drives on the left. Seat belts are compulsory, and using a handheld phone while driving is against the law.
02
A valid licence from your home country is accepted. Drivers must be 25 or older with at least 2 years of driving experience.
03
Fuel stations are mostly around Crown Point and Scarborough and thin out along the north coast and the far north-east. Our cars take premium unleaded.
04
Roads past Plymouth and Roxborough are narrow and winding with blind corners. A short toot of the horn before a tight bend is normal here.
05
Expect pedestrians, goats and parked cars on village roads, and few streetlights outside town. Rain makes the hills slick, so allow extra time.
06
Every rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance. Call the number in your rental documents if anything goes wrong.
Road trips
Approximate drive times from the airport area. Allow longer after rain or at school times, and stop often: the views are the point.

Drive time: about 5 min
Tobago's best-known beaches, right beside the airport. Start or end your trip here.

Drive time: about 15 min
Glass-bottom boats leave from Buccoo for the reef and the waist-deep Nylon Pool.

Drive time: about 20 min
The capital's market and harbour, then the hilltop fort with views over the south coast.

Drive time: about 50 min
Through Plymouth and over the hills to fishing villages and quiet bays.

Drive time: about 1 hr 15 min
Along the windward coast to Tobago's tallest waterfall, then on to Speyside's reefs.

Drive time: about 1 hr 15 min
Rainforest trails and birdwatching across the island's mountain spine.
Flights from Trinidad take about 25 minutes, and some international flights land in Tobago directly. We meet you at arrivals with your car, free of charge.
The inter-island ferry runs from Port of Spain to Scarborough in about two and a half to three hours. We can deliver your car to Scarborough or your hotel.
Most visitors stay in the south-west, close to the airport and beaches. We deliver cars to all of these areas.
